Burning down the house

The disaster I thought I'd averted last week has actually happened.

Don't ask me how but the main folders I was worried about keeping have been lost. I can replace programs, I can replace music, I can make new graphics if I have to, I can scrounge around and try to get copies of a couple of things from others I sent them to ... but there are some that are irreplacable.

Of course I didn't lose anything I could replace did I *sigh*

I'm heartbroken at the moment. I feel like my house has burnt down along with all my photo albums ... yeah, it was my extra special photos that I've lost.

:(

Get ye to a "geek" specialist - really! There are ways to extract anything off a hard drive even if it has been re-formatted. Computer forensics. Might cost some and the files will probably be named funny things and out of sequence but at least they can be recovered. There is probably hope - don't give up yet!!! :)

Don't give up yet. Don't write anything more to that hard drive. For $40 you can get it recovered. Look in the back of Computer Shopper magazine.

Did you go from one OS to another? Are you talking about your old hard drive? More info.

Thanks Seamy, I won't give up (kinda stubborn that way) lol.

Yeah Muse, I was gutted when I found out :(

Shirley ~ What happened was, I transferred the files to a cd and deleted them from my old hard drive. Someone else picked up the cd thinking it was blank and wiped them.

I used a program called Restoration to get them back onto my (old) hard drive and copied them again.

When I tried to transfer them to this new comp they all come up as invalid archives and also I can't open some of the zips. Oh and yeah, the old one was Win98 and this is XPpro. Does that make any sense? lol

oh no. I'm sorry girl. Let this be a lesson to all of us to print our pictures! I'm terrible for that. Tons on my computer but I print rarely.

So where are you at now? Is your old computer is still running? Did you delete from a dos prompt or just in windows? If it was just in win98, did you look in the recycle bin where deleted files should be?

Are you running that Restoration program on both computers? Was it supposed to work? I looked for a web site on that software but didn't find one quickly.

You must be using the cd's you can leave open and delete and write to again. I don't ever do that because CD's are so cheap.

Depending on what that program did, your stuff could still be there. Just be sure not to write any more to that hard drive until you get it back.

Yes, that's quite a jump to go from 98 to xp. A painful one, too, IMHO. (I'm an old DOS fan.)

It'd be handy if you had another old win98 machine running so you could try restoring to another win98. Did you have any problems with the cd writer before?

Let me know if I can help.

Mush,

So sorry about your files. As you say, programs, computers--these things are replaceable. The personal files, well, not so much. I've lost my share of files in the past, so I'm pretty careful about backing my stuff up now.

For most people, their files will fit on one or two DVD/RW disks. If you can update your backup disks once a month or so, the chances for future misery will be far lower.

That, of course, doesn't help you now. As one of your other readers said, there may be a way to get your info back. It might take time and money, but it is possible.

Hope you're doing all right. Best wishes for your data recovery project.

Thanks Fly, hmm yeah I never think of printing but it's a good reminder.

Shirley ~ The restoration proggie brought them back to the recyling bin and yes they're still there. The old hard drive is sitting lost and forlorn in a corner at the moment.

I don't normally use rewritables but I'd run out of the others and no, no probs with it before this.

My son has an old win95 comp running upstairs so I'm going to drag my old one up there and hook it up. Maybe I can still get them somehow.

Oh and yeah, the program does work but I've never tried to save the files it's brought back till now. I probably screwed it up somehow.

Thanks for giving me hope :)

Firehawk ~ Backup discs? What backup discs? lol I know, I'm terribly slack when it comes to backing things up.

Oh oh oh but you just reminded me that I did save some of those pics to a floppy many moons ago. WOW, I better start tearing the place apart to find them and thankyou :)

Better than it was Seamy, taaa :)

Yep, that sucks too. Losing anything like that is awful.

I think I may be able to get some back, not all but anything is better than nothing :)
